UK opens naval support facility in Bahrain
The UK Royal Navy (RN) has completed the first phase of its plan to establish a forward operating base in Bahrain.
A welfare building for sailors and other personnel was officially opened at Mina Salman port in Manama on 10 November by senior members of both countries' royal families.
The new block forms part of a larger installation, known as HMS Juffair, which is set to become fully operational in mid-2017. Providing secure berthing and support for British warships and auxiliary vessels, together with accommodation and recreational facilities for 500 personnel, it will be the RN's first permanent facility 'east of Suez' since 1971.
